About the band
​Legiana Collective is a modern folk band that plays their original compositions and traditionals from all over the world. The focus is on the harmonic blending of the singers voices, accompanied by acoustic instrumentation. Legiana's live shows are always lively, theatrical and danceable, breathing a love of sharing their surprising music with the audience.
The band Legiana Collective has created its own sound from various folk influences, recognizable by the polyphonic arrangements of the female singers accompanied by a surprising array of traditional acoustic instruments. Over the past four years they have developed from different folk traditions, into an original group with their own compositions and a worldly sound.
After their beginnings in different street formations, the members from the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark and Spain are now a fully-fledged podium show, that does not forsake their acoustic sound and theatrical presentation. They have played international tours with shows at Bout du Monde, Eurofolk, Millo Verde and Pelpass, and shows in Paradiso, Mezrab and Grounds in the Netherlands, where they are based, but you can always run into them on the street or in a session.
After their first album, Ariège, the four piece Legiana ensemble on cello, violin, guitar and jarana, expanded with extra members on mandolin, diatonic accordeon, drums, bass, autoharp. On their second album Legiana Collective demonstrated that they can also write their own compositions. The greater part of Wicked Light consists of original songs and is finalised with some old traditionals that get a new life in Legiana-style.
This year they are bringing new work to the stage and are recording a new album in Studio 150 in Amsterdam. Seeing Legiana Collective live is like travelling to a mountain village in the Pyrenees, a cobbled street in Italy or an Irish bar where folks are dancing, laughing and singing.

Legiana Collective is een band die een eigen geluid heeft gecreëerd uit verscheidene folk stromingen. Herkenbaar aan de meerstemmige arrangementen van de zangeressen op een verassende instrumentatie van traditionele akoestische instrumenten. Vanuit verschillende tradities zijn ze inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een originele band met eigen composities die van over de hele wereld lijken te komen.
Ooit begonnen in verschillende formaties op straat zijn de leden uit Nederland, Italië, Denemarken en Spanje nu een avondvullende podium act, waarbij het akoestische geluid en de geleefde presentatie niet verloren gaan. Naast tours langs internationale festivals als Bout du Monde, Eurofolk, Millo Verde en Pelpass en shows op eigen bodem in Paradiso, Mezrab, Grounds en Landjuweel kun je ze altijd tegenkomen op een straathoek of in een sessie.
Na hun eerste album, Ariège, breidde het vierkoppige Legiana – een afgeleide van het Spaanse lejanía – de cello, viool, gitaar en jarana uit met een mandoline, diatonische accordeon, drums, bas, autoharp, harmonium en bijbehorende spelers. Op het tweede album liet Legiana Collective zien dat zij ook zelf kunnen componeren. Wicked Light bestaat grotendeels uit eigen nummers en een aantal oude traditionals die in Legiana-stijl een nieuw leven krijgen.

Het komende jaar zullen zij hun nieuwste werk op de planken brengen en een nieuw album opnemen in Studio 150 in Amsterdam. Wie Legiana Collective live ziet spelen wordt meegenomen naar een moment op een bergdorp in de Pyreneeën, een straat in Italië of een kroeg in Ierland waar wordt gedanst, gezongen, en gelachen.
